00X00000

(+-) Project text

Industrial design is often focused on form, function and usability. But design artifacts especially receive profound meaning when worldly considerations are infused with idealistic world views. So the question is raised: 'How do mundane design objects become sacred? What can design learn from religion, with its admonition for inclusion, tolerance and sufficiency?'

Inspired by the 'Whole Earth Catalog' and the 'Voyager Golden Record', 00X00000 is a collection of encrypted ZIP archives. Each archive holds clues to the hidden password for the next one, like a digital scavenger hunt. The reward is a treasure of cultural works, found footage or inspiring essays that all embrace a change in perspective, together with DIY manuals for building ones own design objects out of simple materials, each costing under 5$ to build. The whole collection falls under the Creative-Commons licence.
